What is the Flesch Reading Ease score?
It's a widely used readability formula that scores text from 0 to 100 based on sentence length and syllable count. Higher scores mean easier-to-read text: 90+ is very easy, while under 30 is very difficult, closer to academic or legal writing.
What does the grade level number mean?
It's the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, an estimate of the US school grade a reader would need to have reached to easily understand the text. A score of 8 means roughly an 8th-grade reading level.
How is syllable count estimated?
Syllables are estimated by counting vowel groups in each word, with a small adjustment for silent trailing "e". It's a heuristic, so it can be slightly off for unusual words, but it's accurate enough for the readability formulas it feeds.
