Does this send my location anywhere?
No. If you use "Use my location", your browser's geolocation is read locally and used only to fill in the latitude/longitude fields here. It's never transmitted anywhere. You can also just type coordinates in manually.
Why does it say the sun never rises or sets?
This happens at high latitudes (near the Arctic or Antarctic circles) during certain times of year, when the sun stays below the horizon all day (polar night) or above it all day (polar day/midnight sun).
How accurate is this calculation?
It uses the well-known 1990 Almanac for Computers sunrise/sunset algorithm, accurate to within a minute or two for most locations and dates, which is precise enough for general planning purposes.
Why do I need to enter coordinates instead of a city name?
Keeping this tool fully offline and client-side means there's no geocoding service to look up city names against. Coordinates are simple to find online, or you can use the "Use my location" button.
Why don't sunrise, sunset, and solar noon match my clock?
Those three are shown in local solar time for the longitude you entered (based on the sun's actual position there), not an official civil time zone. The two can differ by up to half an hour or more, mainly from a location sitting off-center within its time zone (civil zones are pegged to one reference meridian, not to every longitude inside them) and from daylight saving time, which solar time ignores. This app has no time zone database to look up the real one, so solar time is the most honest number it can show for any coordinates on Earth. The live "now" marker on the chart is the exception: it always shows your own device's clock, since that's what "now" means to you.
