Frequently asked

Why is state tax just one rate instead of full state brackets?

Every state (and many cities) sets its own income tax rules, and several have no income tax at all. Modeling all 50 states' brackets is out of scope for a quick estimate. Enter your state's approximate effective rate, or 0 if your state has no income tax.

What's included in the deductions?

Federal income tax (2024 brackets and standard deduction), Social Security (6.2%, up to the annual wage base), Medicare (1.45%, plus the Additional Medicare Tax above the relevant threshold), and your entered state tax rate.

Does this account for pre-tax deductions like a 401(k)?

No. This estimates a straightforward paycheck from gross salary. Pre-tax contributions would reduce the taxable amount and aren't modeled here.

Is this tax advice?

No. It's an estimate for planning purposes only, using 2024 federal figures.
